From Cramped to Bright: A Cambridge Mudroom Transformation

This home’s entrance was once a tight, dimly lit space—nowhere to stash coats, bags, or shoes, and no real sense of arrival. The homeowners wanted something better: a functional, beautiful entry that welcomed them home.

We started by replacing the existing porch with a tiny mudroom addition, adding custom cabinetry and a built-in bench for storage and everyday convenience. But functionality wasn’t enough—we also wanted to bring in light and openness. By vaulting the ceiling, adding a window and skylights, and opening a wall to the main living space, we completely transformed how the space feels.

To keep some definition between the mudroom and living area, we designed a white oak slat wall—a subtle divider that maintains the airy feel while adding warmth and texture. We also specified interior and exterior lighting to enhance the space at all hours, along with a new set of exterior stairs to complete the entry experience.

And for a final touch? We consulted on the exterior paint colors, keeping the original red door—a nod to the home’s past while embracing its fresh new look.

Now, this once-cramped entry is a bright, welcoming space that truly feels like part of the home.
